If there’s one thing that motorcycle enthusiasts are known for, it’s their generosity. This year, Chicago’s bikers helped to collect tens of thousands of toys for the Toys for Tots program at their annual Toys for Tots parade. The parade saw tens of thousands of motorcycle riders, up significantly in attendance over the past few years when the weather has been generally miserable.
Nearly every one of those ten thousand motorcycles was carrying a toy, and many bikes were carrying several toys. Bikers decorated their bikes for the Holidays, as well. There was even a motorcycle decked out to resemble a sleigh, replete with jingle bells. Without a thought for what those decorations would do to his motorcycle insurance agent if he saw them, the rider proudly traveled the parade route, waving at the crowds.
The Toys for Tots program is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. The program’s mission is “is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.” They do this in order to promote a message of being responsible, patriotic and productive citizens, and to spread the joy of Christmas to children.
In addition to the Toys for Tots parade in Chicago, there are many other activities sponsored by local Toys for Tots chapters. Most major cities around the country have some form or another of a Toys for Tots campaign. In cities where a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located, toys are collected and distributed. In other communities, that may not have their own Marine Corps Reserve Unit, a Marine Corps League Detachment can conduct a local campaign. In addition, volunteers, who are often veteran Marines, can be authorized by Toys for Tots to conduct a local campaign, too.
Some of the other kinds of activities you’ll find at local Toys for Tots organizations include golf tournaments, marathons or other types of foot races, bicycle races and all sorts of events. These events not only generate much needed attention to the worthy cause, they also bring in monetary donations to help the Toys for Tots program accomplish their goals.
