So, strap on the leather, shine up the helmet (unless you live where it’s legal to ride without one), make sure your motorcycle insurance is in order, and head out into the sun.

If you ride at all, there’s no doubt that you’re familiar with the bike rallies at Sturgis, Myrtle, and Daytona. Everybody knows about them, and most of us have been there and done that with at least one of the major rallies. As summertime progresses, you may find yourself looking for some other destinations. Here are some good ones that you may not already be familiar with:

Baker City, OR. Hell’s Canyon Motorcycle Rally is one to put on the calendar. The town is one of the most supportive of bikers anywhere in the country, with local police even participating in the rally. The rally includes a self guided tour of Baker County. Generally, bikers ride in groups of about 12. Local businesses are accommodating, and in general, everything is geared up for a great time.

Pott County, OK. Hawg Lakes Motorcycle Rally is a four day event towards the end of July, beginning of August. They do ask that riders not wear colors leave the pets at home, but there’s lots of entertainment, with several good local bands. Another event is held annually in October in nearby Ardmore.

Hot Springs, AR. If you’re looking for a scenic place to ride, you can’t really beat the Ozark Mountains. Every September, Hot Springs hosts its annual Motorcycle Rally, inviting bikers from across the country. The color is just starting to hit the trees this time of year, making it a really amazing place to ride.

Austin, TX. The Republic of Texas motorcycle rally is one of the best anywhere. The community embraces the bikers for the most part, and the town is simply one of the best party towns in the country, even when the rally isn’t going on. Despite a local rumor that the rally is attempting to wipe out the armadillo population, this rally is just about the best time you can have on two wheels, and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than going to Sturgis or Daytona. You might even leave with enough in your wallet for that next motorcycle insurance premium.

The Sturgis Rally is arguably the largest motorcycle rally around. This year marks the 70th anniversary for this epic rally. If you are just now making your plans, you might find housing to be a bit of a premium now. Have no fear; there are a few options at your disposal. Grab your leathers and motorcycle insurance card, as it is time to party.

Campgrounds

Camping is a great way to cut costs of your stay. Camping does take quite a bit more planning on your part though. Most notable is that you have to pack all your camping gear. This could be an issue if you are riding a few hundred miles to get to Sturgis.

The funny thing about campgrounds is that they fill up quickly as well. Be warned that if the people next to you are partying 24 hours straight, you most likely will not get a lot of rest. You could always join them in their festivities as well. Just a though for you.

Rent a home

Renting a home is a great way to rest your head. Finding a home to rent is a bit more work, but there are people who rent out their homes to Sturgis bound riders.

Renting a home might not provide all the amenities like pools, spas, breakfast, and maid service, but it does provide a quieter place to rest your head. There are fewer worries of parties and headboard banging when you rent a home. Snag a friend or tow and drive that cost down even more.

Snag a hotel

By now most hotels are probably full. It still does not hurt to call around. Hotels also have waiting lists you can get on. Get on as many wait lists as you can if you are determined to stay in a hotel in Sturgis.

Another way to get into a hotel is to ask your friends where they are staying. This only works if you have friends going of course. This will also help cut down costs of your stay. After all, you’re only staying in the hotel to sleep right. You should be on the road and out celebrating with all the rest of your biker friends as it is.

Stay in a neighboring town

When all else fails, you can look to a neighboring town for a place to stay. You may have to ride into Sturgis every day, but that’s that the point right? Staying outside of Sturgis provides a few advantages as well.

There is less crowding. This means there less likelihood of having to file a motorcycle insurance claim due to damage on your bike. Less crowding means more open roads to ride. There is likely to be less congestion as well. It also helps support other local communities as you’ll most likely be getting food, rest, and gas at this town.

The 70th Sturgis Rally is bound to be a great time. Be nice to your fellow bikers. Find a place to rest your head now so you can worry about the rides at hand. Make sure your motorcycle insurance is up to date before you head out the door. Most of all have fun and make some new friends.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

The rally takes place in August 2010, and people are ready. Many attendees begin planning for the next year’s trip right away after leaving the current year. The excitement is difficult to shake, and it’s hard not to think about seeing all of your biker friends again. The hills of South Dakota beckon you back year after year after year.

What to See on the Way and After

Sturgis is surrounded by a number of amazing roads for motorcycle riding. There are the Needles Highway, the Wildlife Loop, the Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish Canyon and Vanocker Canyon Road. These are iconic paths, destined to really give you the feeling of freedom that comes from riding on the open road.

You can see plenty of sights, too. There are unforgettable vistas like the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. You can visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, as well as Custer State Park. You can go through the Badlands, and look at Devil’s Tower National Monument. There’s Bear Butte State Park, as well.

Highway 14A, with its wide turns and its winding path will bring you to Deadwood. You can also find the mining town known as Lead. If you choose to drive Highway 385, you can see a number of cities in the Black Hills National Forest, such as Silver City, Custer and Hill City.

Check out New Bikes

Motorcycle industry leaders Harley-Davidson and Victory both introduce their newest model year bikes at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This is the place to be if you want to see what’s going on with Harley-Davidson. And, while Sturgis is certainly known for its Harleys, but today’s rally isn’t by any means only a Harley rally. You’ll find just about every kind of bike available.

Motorcycle-Themed Entertainment

There is plenty to do besides look at bikes during the Rally, too. Sturgis always featuers a number of races, bike shows and even concerts. You’ll also find a number of annual traditions, such as the Mayor’s Ride, Michael Lichter’s exhibit, the World Championship of Custom Bike Building as well as the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

In fact, probably the only thing you won’t find at the Sturgis Rally is motorcycle insurance – but that’s only because you need to buy motorcycle insurance in your home state.

Wisconsin is cold, full of cows, and crazy people who wear cheese shaped hats to football games. This might be a state that one might want to stay away from in their travels, but there are some great museums to see in this cheese induced state. The Harley-Davidson Museum is just one such item of interest.

Why would I want to stop in to this museum when I don’t even like Harleys you ask? This museum is full of rich history on this American based motorcycle maker. This is more than just some advertisement crammed into a building. This is a glimpse at where Harley-Davidson started, how the founders lived, and what drove this company to be the success it is today.

This museum visit can be a short one hour walk through, or a few hours of “oooo’s” and “ahhh’s.” The tour starts out with a look at the coveted “Serial Number 1″ bike. This is believed to be the very first HD ever produced. It now sits proudly on a pedestal. This is an interesting piece of machinery as it gives you the up close and personal view of just how much bicycle there was to the first motorbikes. On the floor lining this glorious piece of machinery is a lighted box that represents the shed this bike was most likely made in. Let’s just say that many of us have had apartments that are bigger than this shed.

As one meanders through the museum, they are inundated with history and facts. Did you know Harley-Davidson was a big player in the World Wars? They were, and some of those bikes can be seen. There are short videos playing to show you just how much training went into riding a motorcycle for wartime missions. To see an armored Harley-Davidson jumping dirt mounds is quite impressive.

Harley-Davidsons’ have been used for just about everything people can put their minds to: Milk deliveries, mail deliveries, and car towing. Yes, that’s right, car towing. It’s an amazing feat, and an even more amazing bike to see.

The second floor of the museum is where some of the most enjoyable bikes are up for display. This is the floor that you get to see the 100th birthday bike that is signed by all 6000 employees is displayed. See the King Kong bike that is a monstrosity of two engines. Want to see the Indiana Jones bike? It’s here as well. You can even finish off your tour by sitting on an Indiana Jones bike with bullwhip in hand and have a photo taken.

This is a great American heritage to see. Even those who don’t like the Harley-Davidson bikes can come away with a bit of respect for all that this company has done for the industry. So why not grab that motorcycle insurance card, your best leathers, and your helmet and cruise on up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I promise you that the staff working there is not wearing funny cheese hats!

Most motorcycle enthusiasts know that riding out on the open road creates a feeling like no other experience. Spending an afternoon, day, or even a week touring can be an exhilarating and thrilling time, and one that lets you see plenty of cool and interesting places. One of the greatest boons to this kind of touring activity in recent years has been the development of GPS technology.

Today’s GPS receivers are cooler and more advanced than ever. There are even GPS devices specifically built for bikes that include shockproof memory. Today’s GPS boxes have detailed road maps, and may have extra features like MP3 player capabilities, support for Bluetooth connections and even Satellite Radio.

Which GPS device will work best for you is, in many ways, a matter of your individual situation. It depends on where you’re going to be riding, and what kinds of things you want the device to do.

For example, you might want your GPS receiver to do more than just go with you on your bike. You might want to be able to take it hiking, or out on a boat. You might want a GPS device that has a large enough screen to read while you’re going down the road, or you might want one you can reference when you’re stopped. You might want one that has a voice-based route directions, or that may not be a part of what you’re looking for.

Garmin makes a line of GPS receivers that are specially designed to be used by motorcyclists. The Zumo 665 is waterproof, has map data included for all of the United States and Canada, includes a car kit, has Bluetooth capability, includes XM radio receiver, and even has a weather radar. That one would certainly be toward the top of the heap, and the price tag shows it.

A step down from there is the Garmin Zumo 660. This one is also waterproof, has US and Canadian maps, a car kit and Bluetooth, but does not have XM or radar. The Zumo 550 is similar, and offers XM Radio as an option.

Most of the other major GPS manufacturers offer similar products. Each comes with a variety of accessories, as well. You can get mounts for most of them, and some of them allow you to subscribe to a service that will put real-time traffic data right on your device.

Finally, you need to make sure that your GPS is covered for theft or loss on your motorcycle insurance policy. The last thing you want to do is have that sucker stolen after paying through the nose for it.

Live the dream: ride your bike in all 50 states. Below you’ll find an incredible ride in each of the 50 states, whether you’re looking for twists and turns or a long road that will take you right to the horizon.

New England
New England’s landscape offers motorcyclists gorgeous rolling hills, plus twists and turns on bike-friendly rural roads. Try Maine’s Western Mountains Loop, New Hampshire’s Hurricane Mountain Road, Vermont’s Route 12 from Hartland to Morrisville, Massachusetts’s Route 116 with its gorgeous hill towns, Connecticut’s Route 77, or Rhode Island’s Route 138, which offers lovely coastal scenery.

Mid-Atlantic
Leave the I-95 corridor behind and get out on some great rides: the Hudson River Valley, Pennsylvania’s Route 125, Schley Mountain in New Jersey, State Route 9 in Delaware, “National Road” in Maryland, and New River Gorge in West Virginia.

Midwest
The Midwest offers just about every type of scenery you can imagine, from South Dakota’s Badlands to Minnesota’s many lakes to Iowa’s country roads. Don’t miss these, whether you live in the great Midwest or are just visiting: Touring Wisconsin’s Wildcat Mountain, going around the tip of Michigan at Cheboygan, riding Routes 45/50 in Illinois, seeing southern Indiana, or cruising Ohio’s State Route 26. After that, you’ll want to bike Nebraska’s Platte River, see Missouri’s share of the Ozarks, ride North Dakota’s Route 1804, and tour Kansas’s Flint Hills Scenic Byway.

Southeast
The South is full of good company, good food, and good riding. Start in Virginia with the Shenandoah Valley; then move on to some rides in the Smokies in North Carolina and Tennessee. More stellar riding can be had around Charleston, South Carolina, in northern Georgia, and in the Florida Keys.

Route 89 in Kentucky is another good bet, as is the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. North Tuscaloosa in Alabama, the Scenic 7 Byway in Arkansas (with thermal springs!) and the Natchitoches Loop in Louisiana are well worth a trip.

Southwest
Check out Utah 261 for spectacular scenery. The Apache Trail in Arizona will show you a good time, as will the roads near Big Bend in Texas. You’ll find unforgettable journeys along the Top of the Rockies (Colorado), among the Jemez Mountains (New Mexico) and throughout northern Oklahoma. California’s coast, especially Highway 1, is legendary.

Northwest and Hawaii
While you’re out west, ride the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, cruise through southern Idaho, take a peek at some fossils along the Montana Dinosaur Trail, and view Nevada’s desert beauty. Washington’s North Cascades Highway and Oregon’s unbelievably blue Crater Lake make fantastic destinations.

Last but most certainly not least, put the Alaskan backcountry and Hawaii’s Highway to Hana (for a grand finale of hairpin-turn-induced adrenalin) on your list.

If you have any road condition updates or know of any other great routes, please post in the comments!

Harley Davidson riders enjoy going to bike shows and events around the country. The events show off Harley Davidson’s both modern and classic, showcase new products, and allow for riders to engage in activities with other riders from around the country. Blogs dedicated to motorcycles usually list events around the country. For fairs, shows, rallies, and charity events, the Hot Bike blog has an extensive list of Harley events taking place in different states. To visit an ongoing attraction and get information about upcoming events, the Harley Davidson Museum’s Blog has a variety of information.

With Harley events being popular among riders, there are quite a few blogs dedicated to chronicling an individual’s Harley experiences. These blogs show riders where other Harley enthusiasts travel on their bike and the experiences they have while on the road. Riders can share their own experiences and engage with fellow riders by starting up discussions in the comments sections of the blogs. The following is a list of personal weblogs that chronicle a rider’s life:

Arizona Harley Dude takes readers on his adventures as he enjoys his later years cruising around on his Harley.

Jeff Henshaw writes The Hog Blog and chronicles his time going to Harley shows. He also includes lots of pictures of his rides.

Chronicles of a Harley Davidson Rider is a personal blog that follows one man around as he attends different bike weeks and shows.

Bruce Rossmeyer offers a blog that covers everything from events to sales on products.

Harley Davidson products include clothes, boots, jewelry, scarves, and bike accessories. There are both vintage and new Harley Davidson products. Biker News Online showcases an eccentric listing of Harley items such as toolboxes and garden gnomes. Harley lovers can find clothing for men, women, kids, and even pets. Leather jackets and leather accessories are a large part of the motorcycle lifestyle, and the blog Harley Davidson Leather Jackets discusses the benefits of Harley leather.

Other clothing and accessories products include gloves, boots, helmets, sunglasses, belts, bandanas, shirts, and rain gear, like the products seen at Harley Davidson Clothes and Accessories. Products blogs can give riders an idea of the best gear and new gear coming out on the market. The Harley Accessories blog gives riders reviews and opinions specifically for Harley boots. For reviews and opinions on all sorts of accessories, Harley 883 has that information.

One aspect of Harley Davidson motorcycles that enthusiasts take seriously is repair and customization. Many riders don’t trust their bikes with just any mechanic, while others prefer to perform their own repairs. Customization of a Harley can include a paint job, after market parts, custom handlebars, seats, or tires. There are blogs dedicated to the repair and customization of Harley Davidson’s. The Harley Accessories blog covers a variety of accessories, from timing covers to chrome blocks, for Harley’s. Warren’s Cycle is a blog dedicated to Harley parts and information for repair and customization.

Bloggers trying to help people find repair manuals for their Harley offer a great service to do-it-yourself mechanics. Blogs like OtoHarley and the Sportster offer repair manuals and mechanical help for Harley owners. The Harley Davidson Tips blog offers postings about different repair concerns and information that novice Harley owners may find helpful.

With the expanse of both personal and business blogs, Harley Davidson enthusiasts now have multiple avenues to explore the world of motorcycle riding. Whether looking for repair information, products, or a fellow rider to start up a friendship with, Harley blogs offer up the information.

Love the open road? If you can’t be on your bike 24-7, these blogs are the next best thing. Each of these is well worth a read, even if it means spending a little time in front of a computer instead of on your bike. (Gotta do something on rainy days.)

News, Culture, and Just Ridin’

Every rider has a different take on the motorcycling life. Head on over to the Great Motorcycle Pizza Tour for a dose of humor, news, and personal anecdote. Walter Kern’s Motorcycle Views shares thoughts about bike culture and history, news, and more. Midlife Motorcycle Madness is an excellent stop along your reading road, as are Motorcycle Mack and 40 Years on Two Wheels. Bolty, relatively new to riding, chronicles her adventures on a 2007 SV650. Cruisin’ Down Under promises (and delivers) “No rules, no politics, just ridin.’” Or, read about a Harley riding family at Our Harley Days. Pat Henderson’s Life and Motorcycle Travels Blog covers mainly motorcycle-related stories, with a few other things thrown in. Your Bike Life covers biking culture with everything from news to book reviews and is very accessible to new riders. Dale Franks’ blog has great design and offers plenty of good reading about bike news, gear, and more. Kneeslider, Atlas Rider, Tilted Horizons, and the Motorcycle Diaries round out your must-read list.

Amazing Travel Tales and Awesome Rides

Thinking of riding around the world or across the country? Take a look at Motorcycle Moments from Around the World, which chronicles the continuing adventures of Clara and Kevin, most notably their 2007 motorcycle honeymoon to 42 countries. Read the story of one woman’s journey by motorcycle across India at Edge of India, by professional journalist C.L. Stambush. Orson’s Travel Blog will make you book some plane tickets for yourself and your bike. Or check out the tale of Ben Buckman, who logged 14,000 miles in 37 states on his cross-country motorcycle trip. Need more places to visit? Check out Bill’s Motorcycle Adventures (Upper Midwest), Motorcycle Paradise (Australia), Motorcycle Adventures (Louisiana), Canadian Motorcycle Rider (Kazakhstan…er, Canada), Northwest Harley Blog (Pacific Northwest), John’s Harley Rides (Australia), Gaijin Bikers (Japan), or The Ride Report (California).

Not Just for Chicks

These sites offer some perspective from riders who are women, and are good reading for bikers of either gender. The Biker Chickz Blog encourages “all women to ride in front” while Fuzzy Galore is a self-proclaimed “Girlie Motorcycle Blog.” Chrome and Pearls is a relatively new blog and a “voice for women riders.” At She Rides a Beemer, a mom chronicles her adventures on a bike with her teenage daughter, among other things. Find reviews, news, advice for women who ride, humor and more at Blade Rider. The Free Wheelin’ Canadian Women’s Motorcycle Club has news, humor, and good motorcycle readin’ that’s not just for women (and not just for Canadians.)
